The ancient merchant republic of Venice is well known as one of the most unique places in the world thanks to its unmistakable infrastructure of canals where most cities have roads and gondolas where there should be cars. With much of the city unchanged since medieval times, the limited space on the main island of Venice (there are 118 islands that make up the province) is much coveted and those who live there are privileged. Once a fiercely proud and extremely wealthy autonomy, some of the sights to behold in this fabulous city are beyond comparison, such as the Ca’d’Oro (literally House of Gold), the Doge’s Palace and of course, the magnificent St Mark’s Square. With much of the city’s residents having time to spare, Venice is home to some of Italy’s most prestigious annual events, such as Carnevale and the famous Venice Film Festival. |
